thanks, that's what i wanted to hear that there is greyhound service. will suit us fine. i agree, that larch valley/sentinel pass, and some other areas are within walking distance of lake louise. but i was more concerned how we'd get to yoho park trailheads from either banff or lake louise. there is a three month calendar wait for lake o'hara bookings - i'm on top of it!

: I don't recall having a problem getting the O'hara bus in lake Louise. For some things you could take the Greyhound bus and get off on the highway near the trail head. As I said I used to hitch hike. Many of the visitors don't walk further than the initial views at Lake Louise, nearest tshirt shop etc so there is not much business for a trail head delivery system. I'll check when I am through in late May though. I think with planning there are enough trails that you can manage. You will also meet people in the campsites I would imagine as well. make your reservations for Lake O'Hara though now. You won't regret that portion of the trip and the trail heads will be at your doorstep for a few days while up there.

: : thanks for your replies. we are going to be in banff and yoho. how does one get from lake louise to field, or to the place on highway 1 where you can catch the bus to lake o'hara. or if we want to go further up the icefield parkway for the day? what public transportation options exist for hikers and backpackers to travel to and from these trailheads? another one is the emerald lake-burgess circuit (but how can one get to emerald lake without a car), or up the yoho valley road without a car to walk the iceline trail?

: :
: : : Where are you talking? Whistler, Garibaldi park, Banff? Let me know the area and then I can answer transportation issues.
: : : : quick question, what kind of public transportation options are there to go back and forth from trailheads? i keep reading about access by car, what happens to visitors, who want to hike and not drive around? there seem to be a few private transportation companies like brewster and white mountain adventures, are these the only options? they seem expensive! i'm going to start researching more earnestly now ... thanks.
