This was a great place to stay, right in the center of bustling Thamel and a great place te recouperate after a long stay in Tibet. The guys are always generous to help travel around Nepal. Good food, great rooms, though the bed matras is on the hard side (but where isn't it!). We paid 12 dollar per night, make a deal via internet.

For the price, you cannot beat this place. We paid on average $10 per night. And for that cost we were picked up at the airport for free. We never ate at the hotel (to many other places to go) but the accomidations were good. I would have no problem recomending this place to any treker.

I checked the rooms and they were very nice, modern but expenisve. The Hotel staff were charming but the room they showed me looked directly into a Nepali block of flats, I mean yards from the balcony. So choose the room carefully. Think they wanted a high price for the room

I fell in love again here. If you're drunk, look for the Chinese lanterns. To Sarah, I love you. They could do with a better system for turning on the air conditioning, though- one has to ask the charming staff.

The location is a short distance outside of Thamel so the price is lower than comparable places inside the tourist ghetto. The owner and his family are very warm friendly people and you may be invited to dine with them - a real treat. No meals are provided normally, but breakfast can be pre-arranged the day before. Take your breakfast on the roof with great views.

There are 2 buildings: the main Hotel & the Annex (for overflow). The main hotel is very nice and quiet on the higher floors. Staff willing to negotiate price, so do bargain.
The Annex is low quality. I was stuck there the 1st nite, then negotiated a move to a nice roon in the main Hotel the next day.

GREAT service~ Under the violent threat of moaist insurgence the staff at Excelsior were understanding, kind, and offered a safe haven with EXCELLENT customer service. Even a bottle of water in the middle of the night is no inconvenience for these dedicated folks. And location is perfect. Internet cafe in the hotel, several less than 20 feet out the door, great shops, a fine clean street... A++

In the heart of the tourist area this mid range hotel is very convenient and the staff are very friendly. The owners are Tibetan, and Tibetans find it very hard to make a living in Nepal (or Tibet) so they get my support, whenever I can do so.

Garuda is too expensive for the quality it offers - it's OK, but it really should be cheaper. And another thing - they were quite eager to send the postcarts for me. They even offered to buy the stamps for me (I gave them the money of course). Needless to say, the postcard never arrived!

I always stayed here when i went to KTM and I am going back this year. Great staff, helpful with travel arrangements and gear storage. It is more expensive than you can get elsewhere but people who complain about costs in Nepal when they live in the West are a little unrealistic and /or sad.My postcards always arrived when Garuda sent them.

This year was the first time I stayed in this Hotel and it was excellent. You can get cheaper of course but it was clean, staff were excellent and good showers. Close proximity to all areas of Thamel especially the nightlife.

I've stayed at the Garuda more than once and have always been pleased with their service and the quality of their hotel. And my postcards were delivered just fine.

I've stayed here on a few occasions - Its the most peaceful hotel in Kathmandu, although becoming a little expensive.
It has a beautiful garden, excellent staff, good food, the earliest opening breakfast restaurant, bicyle hire, motorbike hire, TV, communications centre.
Its main advantage is that everyone knows where it is.

Very nice (western like). Very central.
Very expensive (on local scale) - $20-30. Nothing included.
Staff overworked, doing their best.

The KGH has to be one of the most fabulous establishments on the planet. These guys really look after you, everything you need is there, it's a world away from the bustle on the streets outside and the food is excellent. At US$6 a single room, it's hard to beat on price too. I first stayed there in 1983 and it's still number one as far as I'm concerened.

A haven of peace in the clamorous crazy beauty of KTM. I love the "colonial" eccentricity of the rooms. When you simply can't take another person offering you Tiger Balm, just sit in the garden with a cup of tea and a book. Before you know it, you'll have the equanimity of the Buddha who's been smiling at you all along.
If that's not enough, it's centrally located, taxis are available just steps away from the front door and if you find yourself lost in the maze of marg and chowk, *everyone* knows where it is.
Some may find $20/night expensive. I believe you get what you pay for and don't regret a penny of it!

Very relaxing place AFTER a trek. Enjoy the satellite TV, everybody seemed friendly enough. Very convenient as they can plan tours for you.
Room was decent at $20/night.

One goes for to KGH expecting the whole package: fame, quietness, services, restaurant, garden, location - not necessarily in that order.
My experience was that the ordinary room at 30 USD was a rip off, consciously accepted, as I wanted the KGH exprience. I could have paid 12 dollars somewhere else in Thamel for the same quality. Staff were very busy and tired looking but still did a good job. The atmosphere, in the front yard at breakfast or diner and the garden at the back, is great. Another downside is that these days it attracts too many yuppies, and not enough good ol'closet hippies from the 70's like myself.
There are so many other good hotels and guesthouses in Thamel (where I stayed on my other trips) with amazingly friendly and professional staff, nice gardens and roof-top terraces, good location - that I would find it hard to justify to go and stay at KGH again and pay premium price just for the name and the lay down shacks at the front where you can sip tea in the early morning, or smoke some pot (relly nice by the way... the shacks I mean). Still, as the old Swahili proverb goes "de gustibus et coloribus non disputandum est". To each their own.

The Kathmandu Guest House does have the nicest facility around, but...
But I was absolutely underwhelmed with my room. My wife and I reserved one of the more expensive garden rooms, but the only room available when we arrived had separate cots and was old and a bit shabby. We were surprised at such limited availability given that tourism was still way off in mid-September - the place didn't seem that busy.
When we returned from our trek, the only room they could find was really shabby with a worn out bed and a second story view of the garbage dumpster in the alley outside our room. I went to the front desk to request a different room and was told that there were no other rooms. I had made reservations months ahead of time and had two crummy rooms as my reward.
I headed back to the room to tell my wife. She had furhter explored the room and had found a rat turd on the pillow on the bed - sort of a poor twist on the "mint on the pillow". And that was the last straw. We went down the street to the Garuda where we got a far better room for the same money. We'd stayed at the Garuda in the past and had been very satisfied. The staff at the front desk of the KGH tried to upgrade us, but you shouldn't have to threaten to check out to receive good service - we were out of there!
I can only guess that maybe they reserve their best rooms for large trekking groups or previous guests, but I'll never bother to stay there again.

Went to KGH again after 3 years... Not much has changed since my last stay there in 1999. Perhaps the area in front, where the garden restaurant and the breakfast place is - all that looks better than last time. Rooms are the same, garden facing room for 30 US, definitely not "value for money", as you can get a similar quality room for half the price almost anywhere else. Still, the whole KHG atmosphere compensates for the relatively expensive rooms. My son and I were given a bigger room on the ground floor, quiet and nice.
Unfortunately I did not have time for a lot of lounging around in the garden or the front area, which is the main reason one would go to KGH.
So I will most probably stay elsewhere, unless I decide I have time to laze around.
