Day 16 Dookanelly to Possum Springs |
A very hilly and challenging day's walk. The worst day on the Bibbulmun Track you could choose to get lost on (yours truly did). The first 2 kilometres are the only really level section, which is the calm before the storm. The long gully Bridge across the Murray River is a feature and an ideal lunch stop. The Worsley Alumina Conveyor is evident and the hum from it will be audible for the next day or so. Possum Springs is situated on a slope above a creek. |

![]() Well, today I got off to a good start leaving Dookanelly at 8:30am. About 4 kilometres into my walk I met two lovely ladies, Pat and Helen who gave me an apple and a banana. The Lord must have known what was to come because half and hour later I was walking along a dirt road thinking "Gosh, haven't seen a waugal for a while?" Probably day-dreaming, but 10 minutes later on I realized that something was wrong. I backtracked but could not find where or how I had entered this track. I walked and walked, resigned to the fact I was lost. Something in my head said go back again and find out where I went wrong even if it takes all day. After 3 hours I finally found my mistake. I had turned left into that track 20 metres after a waugal "left sign", instead of left AT the waugal. The track was so overgrown that I thought it must be left at the road. I was scared, humbled and had visions of being on the Channel 7 News. Arrived at 4:45 pm, never before was I so pleased to see the hut! |
