Coffs Harbour Target for Parameter
Wednesday 11 July 2004:
Improving Danehill four year-old Parameter will be set for
a tilt at the $70,000 Coffs Harbour Gold Cup following his impressive all
the way win at Doomben yesterday.
The Maryann Thexton trained front running stallion controlled the
Class Three field from the onset after being sent straight to the front
over the 2020m course.
With jockey Chris Whiteley testing his rivals well out from home, the
heavily support Parameter (11/8 fav) skipped away down the side before
posting a comfortable winning margin of almost five lengths at the post.
“He has a very high cruising speed,” said Thexton following yesterday’s
victory.
“Being out of a Shirley Heights mare, he will stay all day but he is also
blessed with a nice turn of foot thanks to Danehill.”
“I think the 2300m around Coffs Harbour will suit him.”
“We’ll give him one more run before Coffs after which he will go for a
spell”
“I think he has a very bright future as a distance horse.”
The Coffs Harbour Cup (2300m) is scheduled for Thursday the 5th
of August on the second day of the Coffs Harbour Racing Carnival.
Parameter posted a similar dominant all the way victory at his previous
start on his home track over 1800m on June 26.
That win followed a spectacular fall a week earlier, with Parameter
loosing rider Michael Johnston approaching the home turn after setting up
what appeared to be a winning lead.
A subsequent steward’s inquiry into the incident revealed that a gear
failure contributed to the fall.
