Triple 38 Class! I'd like to see it these days, but it was still possible in 1972. A photo run for the RTM sees 3801, 3813 and 3820 about to blow smoke over the smiling faces of the passengers as they clamber over the North Portal of Picton Tunnel in order to photograph the action. NSW, Australia, 1435mm (4ft 8½mn) 10 Dec, 1972. |

6042 and 6037 blast up Fassifern Bank one last time, with a 1200 tonne plus coal train from Newstan Colliery, en route to Port Waratah. Mechanical problems forced 6037 out of service a few days after this shot was taken, bringing to an end the working of double "G's" on the NSW railways.

The NZR operated two preserved steam locos, either Ab795 or Ab778 on a tourist passenger service that ran twice daily between Lumsden and Kingston on South Island, New Zealand. This train actually hauled empty freight wagons to Kingston on the morning trip, then returned with them laden on the afternoon trip to Lumsden. Here we are looking across the freight wagons from the end platform at Ab795 climbing away from Kingston. Otago, South Is, New Zealand, 1067mm (3ft 6in) Jan 1973. |

An unusual occurrence on the South Maitland Railways was double 10 Class on a non-air train. Here, SMR 10 class 22 and 18 haul a single trainload of non-air hoppers up Neath Bank to Aberdare Colliery to be left there for the duration of the Miners' Holidays. Both Aberdare and Bell Collieries would be cleared of their full or partially loaded Government air hoppers by day's end, so that these would not be out of traffic on the Government tracks during the holidays. NSW, Australia, 1435mm (4ft 8½in) Sep 1977. |
 |
The non-air double header pause in Caledonia yard, near the Abadare Coal Washery. The crews in the locos seem keen to see what that bloke is bringing to them across the tracks. NSW, Australia, 1435mm (4ft 8½in) Sep 1977. |
 |
Once the SMR began to replace the private non-air hoppers on its lines with the Government air-braked wagons, additional time at the start of each trip had to be allowed for the train's brakes to be pumped up. here, dawn is just showing as the rythymic tune of an air compressor is heard over the distant traffic noises of Maitland awakening to another day. NSW, Australia, 1435mm (4ft 8½in) April 1978. |

6039 poses for the photographers on the way out from the Mt Thorley Balloon Loop, her freshly applied coat of waste oil glinting impressively in the afternoon sunlight. Soon she will be propelling her 12 car, 500t train at 80kph up Whittingham Bank. Not bad for a vintage freight locomotive with this load.

 |
This great spectacle of the SMR was repeated three or four times daily; it is said that the students in the school adjacent to Caledonia Bank would pause from their sports in the oval, even pause in their lessons, maybe even run to the classroom windows to peer out at the towering volcanic columns that were the exhausts from two 10 Class given their all to lift 1,400 tonnes of coal from the coal loader at Pelton. NSW, Australia, 1435mm (4ft 8½in) June 1979. |
 |
About 10 minutes after the previous shot was taken, our train is approaching Caledonia Station, the worst of the struggle now over. It is interesting, but a little sad to note that all the superstructure, in the background, of the Abadare Coal Washery has been allgone, demolished in more recent years once it closed down. NSW, Australia, 1435mm (4ft 8½in) June 1979. |

The South Maitland Railways produced some of the most spectacular photo opportunities on cold Winter's mornings. This photo of No 26 on an Aberdare train is typical of Neath Bank for those photographers prepared to face the morning chill, and luckily, the sun breaks through a gap in the cloud at the right moment, but only just in time. The rest of the day was heavily overcast and wet.
NSW, Australia, 1435mm (4ft 8½in) July 1979. |

Another day, another double header! The South Maitland Railways were the last line where heavy action regular service could be found in australia until it finally ceased its steam actions in June, 1983. NSW, Australia, 1435mm (4ft 8½in) July 1979. |

A double header runs a load of empties down across Swamp Creek to get a bit of a run up past B Siding and on to Weston in another dawn one memorable winter's day so long ago. NSW, Australia, 1435mm (4ft 8½in) July 1979. |

The fog is slowly lifting on Neath Bank, but not before it casts an atmospheric shroud across the scene as a couple of 10 Class plod purposefully up the grade on their way to Pelton Coal loader. NSW, Australia, 1435mm (4ft 8½in) July 1979. |

The deepening chill of a cold winter's afternoon is evident here, as 6029 performs for the photographers on the approaches to the Lachlan River Bridge, just outside of Forbes, returning from a circular West to South Long Weekend Tour. NSW, Australia, 1435mm (4ft 8½in) 6 June, 1981. |

It's hard to tell whether the back road or the pioneer railway between Koorawatha and Grenfell was more meandering. 3026 is running right out to Grenfell on this pituresque rural branch. Unfortunately this is no longer possible as the branch has been completely closed. NSW, Australia, 1435mm (4ft 8½in) 12 June 1982. |

The beginning of the end. The word has spread rapidly: this is the last week of steam traction on the South Maitland Railways. In five days it will finish, but the last day dawns beautifully clear and cold and life on the railway seems unchanged and as timeless as ever. SMR 10 and SMR 31 roll a load of empties around the sunny side of Weston Station, the running of the railway on the Up track only in recent times has Down trains running wrong road for must of the journey out, and here glinting in the early light. NSW, Australia, 1435mm (4ft 8½in) 22 June, 1983. |
|
Streaming a very nice vapour trail, 5367 is transferring a trainload of rolling stock and ex BHP Diesel D9 behind her as she negotiates the downhill run of Murrobo Bank into Blayney. It is a cold morning for November in the Central West, near Bathurst, but it sure works for the few hard-bitten photographers who are present.

Blayney can be just made out in the mist in the background, as 5367 works her load up the 1 in 40 section of the climb out of that Central Western town with an interesting load of equipment on transfer to Cowra.

An occasional treat for railfans is a triple header tour up the Mountain from Unanderra to Moss Vale. The long pinches of 1 in 30 grades on this cross country line give plenty of opportunities for the locos on such trips, often dragging full goods loading, to really strut their stuff. Here at Ocean View, a few kilometres from the top of the 1 in 30 to Robertson, the worst of the climbing is over but the three locos on this trip, 3642, 3801 and 5910 are still putting on a bit of a show for the lineside aficionados of big steam action.
NSW, Australia, 1435mm (4ft 8½in) 9 November, 1991. |
 |
SMR18 (aka BOB) made railway history when, accompanied by 3112, it left East Greta Junction on the night of 8/9/95 for Eveleigh Workshops and its new life on 3801's Cockatoo Run. Its first load trials were conducted over 2 days on the RTM's section of the Hill Top Branch and seen here approaching Buxton at the end of the trials.

3801 is enjoying a few more months as a black, streamlined 38 class with red whiskers, much to the delight of railfans, as she battles the steep grades in the heavy rain and mist with sister loco 3830 on the long, slippery 1 in 30 sections of the Unanderra to Moss Vale Line.

Na 7A and Na 12A approach Menzies Creek on the first train of the day, a guard's van between them. This seems an unusual consist at first glance, particularly to a foreigner from the North like me, but this train is normally timetabled to split at Menzies Creek, some of the first set returning to Belgrave behind 7A or diesel traction, and another train, made up of cars left at Menzies Creek continuing on to Gembrook, with the remaining cars, behind Na 12A.

R711 holds the unique position of drawing the fastest regular steam hauled passenger service in the world. Every weekend, before the demise of the Company, Westcoast Railway's train regularly reached speeds in excess of 115kph in its 3 hour run between Spencer Street, Melbourne and the coastal town of Warrnambool, over 300 km west of Melbourne. Here, a stop is being made at Colac for water, but there is ample time for the fleet-footed photographer/passenger to get the quick shot of this impressive engine taking a drink.

Standing on this spot many years ago during a photostop with three of the 38 Class on the front, I suspect none of those photographers that stood above the North Portal would have imagined that one day they might see a train with five steam locos on the front from the same spot! Nonetheless it happened: here we see a train bound for Moss vale with 1709, 1210, 2705, 3112 and 3526 up front. NSW, Australia, 1435mm (4ft 8½in) 17 Sep, 2005. |
