I'm working on a major update of this section, but in the meantime, to celebrate the start of re-construction of Lambing Flat in its new home, here are a few photos of Lambing Flat in its old location in my attic at Burwood. The photos were taken by Bob Gallagher, managing editor of Australian Model Railway Magazine, in early 1999, just before the layout was dismantled for our move.
An overall
view of the layout looking towards the Demondrille fiddle yard with 5262
waiting in the loop for 3324 to arrive with an Up passenger.
On a fine
summer’s day during the late 1940’s, K class no 5516 quietly drifts into
Lambing Flat with a goods train from the South. The locomotive is
a Classic models 55 class that is owned by Mike McCormac and has been modified
to represent 5516 as she appeared just after WW2, after having her original
tapered boiler replaced with a “standard” parallel boiler, but before she
was fitted with electric light. As no electric headlight or marker
lights were fitted at this period the model correctly carries two oil lamps
above the front buffer beam. The real 5516 was allocated to Cowra
during this period, so it is an appropriate locomotive for a layout that
is an ‘alternative’ interpretation of the southern end of the Blaney-Harden
cross country link. The heavy weathering, particularly the near white boiler,
was a distinctive feature of locomotives operating in the western area
of NSW during the steam era, and is another detail that helps to firmly
“locate” the layout in time and space, as does the square cornered steel
S truck, which was constructed from a no longer available Craftsman etched
brass kit.
3063T,
a Trax Brass model, has a ride on Lambing Flat's Scratchbuilt 60ft steel
turntable.
5184 departs
towards Harden (Demondrille fiddle yard) with a
Protype
LFX second class dogbox and a Stephen Johnson LHG.
The LFX
is still available from Lloyds
Model Railways, though it is now marketed as a CX
5516 hauls
a Down train past the flour mill on the southern outskirts of Lambing Flat.
The mill
module was the first section of the layout to be constructed, way back
in 1983.
3324 hauling
a down passenger consisting of BX, FS, LFX and EHO, crosses the timber
trestle over a farm access track, just north of Lambing Flat.
Back
when Lambing Flat was still an exhibition layout I briefly experimented
with a pinhole lens. This was the only image I ever managed to successfully
capture.
